Hugo Gonçalves (Portugal, 1976) is an award winning novelist, journalist, and TV and film writer. He wrote seven novels and writes regularly for the press. He has lived in New York, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro.
His news report "Esto es el fin del mundo" about Venezuela's 1999 flash floods earned him the Prémio Revelação do Clube Português de Imprensa. His 2023 novel Revolução that delves into the last years of the Estado Novo dictatorship in Portugal and the first years of democracy, was awarded the 2024 Fernando Namora Literary Prize. And the Netflix series Rabo de Peixe (Turn of the Tide), which he co-wrote, loosely based on the 2001 incident of the drug courier yacht Sun Kiss 47 running ashore off the coast of Rabo de Peixe, the Azorean village in São Miguel, and tragically flooding the community with cocaine, was awarded the 2024 Golden Globes Portugal for Best Fiction and Best Actor.
Hugo Gonçalves will present at RIC on his writing for TV and film, drawing on the similarities and differences with his journalistic and literary work.
