Multicultural Student Nurse Organization
Membership
The Multicultural Student Nurse Organization (MSNO) is made up of Latinx, Asian, African-American, African, and Indigenous students of color.
Foundational Belief
MSNO believes that the Zvart Onanian School of Nursing, which places cultural competence as a requisite skill, will be better equipped to prepare students for real-world situations by closely working with an organization of students who live these experiences daily.
A Mission for Equality and Deliberate Inclusion
MSNO strives to serve as student leaders, advocates and mentors for nursing students of color at Rhode Island College to ensure that they are equipped with equal opportunity and adequate resources to successfully complete the nursing program. Ultimately MSNO works toward creating a culture within the Zvart Onanian School of Nursing that embraces diversity and is deliberate about inclusion.
A Taskforce Partnership
MSNO works in partnership with the Zvart Onanian School of Nursing’s Diversity and Inclusion Taskforce, made up of faculty and students. The taskforce has three subcommittees, which MSNO members also sit on.
Involving 3 Subcommittees
- The first subcommittee provides academic support for students of color and ELL students.
- The second subcommittee focuses on faculty development to help faculty become more equipped to address issues of diversity and inclusion and to teach cultural competence in their courses.
- The third subcommittee focuses on supporting faculty who are integrating into their courses the knowledge and skills students need to be prepared to provide culturally competent care.
Student Nursing Association
The Student Nursing Association is open to any RIC student interested in nursing. This organization was established to:
- promote high standards of professional nursing practice through nursing education
- provide programs representative of fundamental and current professional interests and concerns to nursing students
- inform the student body of the nature of professional nursing
- provide a forum for investigation of issues in health care
- speak for better health in the college community
Meetings are held in the Nursing Lounge in Fogarty Life Science during free period on Wednesdays from 12:30–2 pm.
