Federally Mandated Groups

The Institutional Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) exist in accordance with federal law. They serve to ensure appropriate human and animal welfare in our academic environments.

Federal law requires that academic institutions such as RIC, in which live vertebrate animals are used in research and/or teaching, must establish and maintain an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to ensure humane treatment of animals.

Federal law and RIC policy mandate that human participants in research studies be adequately protected from harm. RIC's Institutional Review Board (IRB) is responsible for reviewing such studies to ensure federal guidelines are met.
