Honors Program in Africana Studies

Africana studies majors with outstanding records are eligible and strongly encouraged to participate in the Departmental Honors Program in Africana studies. 

Who is Eligible

To be eligible, you must be an Africana studies major with a 3.25 GPA in Africana studies required courses and a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Transfer students without established GPAs at RIC may be considered for honors eligibility on the basis of their transcripts from their previous institution(s).

What to Expect

You will need to secure a faculty advisor and apply to the program director in writing by Spring registration of your junior year. During the two semesters of your senior year, you are expected to complete a research paper (or an equivalent project in the visual, performing or studio arts) of exceptional quality, while working in consultation with your faculty advisor.

Funding

If you require funding to complete your honors project, you may be eligible for an award from the Anne & Bob De Stefano Undergraduate Research Program. For more information on this award, please visit the College Honors Program or contact the director of the Africana Studies Program no later than three semesters before you graduate.

Africana Studies Program

The Africana Studies Program at Rhode Island College is one of the oldest Black studies programs in New England. We offer a transdisciplinary curriculum in the arts, humanities and social/behavioral sciences.
