Math Milestone

The Math Milestone is a prerequisite for all college level mathematics and lab science courses.  This requirement must be fulfilled within your first year at the college.

There are multiple ways to meet the requirement:

  1. Appropriate placement on RIC’s Math Placement Exam (see Math Placement below)
  2. Successful completion of Math 010 or equivalent
  3. Transferring in a course equivalent to a RIC Math course (Math 010, 120, 139, 143, 177 or higher)
  4. Classic Accuplacer scores (test date prior to August 2018)
Elementary Algebra of at least 57
    Or
Arithmetic + Elementary Algebra sum of at least 107
  5. Next Generation Accuplacer scores
QAS (Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, Statistics) score of at least 250

If you took either Accuplacer at another school and met the minimum score requirements, please have the scores sent from your previous school to testscores@ric.edu.  These scores can only be used for the math milestone, not for math placement.

Once you have satisfied the Math Milestone, you will have a Level 1 math placement.

Math Placement Exam FAQs

It is very important that students begin their college mathematics coursework at the appropriate level.  All first year students will be required to take a mathematics placement exam for proper placement into their mathematics courses. Transfer students who are not transferring in a math course must take the math placement exam. Transfer students who are transferring in a math course should verify whether or not they need the placement exam by emailing Megan at mdibonaventura@ric.edu once their transfer credits are posted.

It is a timed exam used to determine the appropriate math course for your current level of preparation. An internal calculator is available on some of the problems, otherwise use of a calculator is not allowed.

The exam ranges from arithmetic to precalculus and will ask a variety of questions at different levels to determine your appropriate placement.

To get a sense of the types of questions you will see and the answer format, it is highly recommended that you use the online practice test before taking the proctored exam.

Please Note: The online practice test can only be attempted once and is not scored.

Use the Guide to Achieve a Level 1 Math Placement to meet the Math Milestone and place into college level math courses.

Upon completion of the exam, you will be placed into your initial mathematics course. Please note that although this may not be the course required by your major, successful completion should adequately prepare you for the required course.

Course Placements

  • Level 0: Math 010 (non-credited course necessary to satisfy the math milestone)
  • Level 1: Math 120, 139*, 143, 240* (Placing in this level or greater means you have successfully completed the Math Milestone.)
  • Level 2: Math 177* plus courses from Level 1
  • Level 3: Math 209* plus courses from Levels 1 and 2
  • Level 4: Math 212* plus courses from Levels 1-3

*Math course that satisfies the General Education Mathematics requirement.

All students must complete the Math Milestone by the end of their first year at the college.  The Math Milestone is a prerequisite for math courses and lab science courses, so it is important to complete it in a timely manner.  Placing into Level 1 or higher on the math placement exam will fulfill the Math Milestone.  Use the Guide to Achieve a Level 1 Math Placement to prepare for the placement exam.

The Math Milestone is also required for admission to programs in the School of Nursing and School of Education.

All students may retake the math placement exam once, following a two-month waiting period that should be used to prepare.  You may use our practice materials and our Math Learning Lab to schedule tutoring appointments.

Upon completion of the exam, you will be placed into your initial mathematics course.  Your placement will appear on the screen.  Scores are uploaded to MyRIC within 24 hours of test completion.
