Graduate Assistant TESOL
Full-time (20 hours per week); Preferred availability in office Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays
Primary Purpose
The Rhode Island College Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Program (TESOL) graduate assistant (GA) will work with the TESOL Program to maintain systems currently in place as well as help develop and implement new systems and initiatives in the 2025-2026 academic year.
Duties and Responsibilities
During 2025-26, the TESOL program GA would provide the following support:
- Network with graduate candidates by:
- Creating and distributing up-to-date student communications, e.g., a monthly electronic newsletter and other announcements.
- Organizing student and student/faculty events.
- Collaborating with student organizations.
- Participating in outreach to prospective students.
- Support assessment processes through:
- Assisting in assessment, evaluation and other continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Collection, review and reporting of program assessment information including graduate, supervisor, and employer survey information.
- Address program and faculty needs by:
- Developing literature reviews for future courses and initiatives.
- Gathering information to foster program improvement.
- Assisting in new and ongoing research projects.
- Assist in grant writing: Support literature reviews and related tasks to help faculty secure external funding.
- Assist with marketing and attracting diverse students to the programs by:
- Improving the TESOL website to highlight program, faculty, and student accomplishments.
- Using social media to connect with professionals, alumni, supervisors, and the public about our programs.
- Introducing new social media platforms that will enhance our communications and marketing.
- Tracking graduates to highlight their employment rates and professional successes.
Learning Outcomes
We anticipate that this assistantship will enhance the professional skills for any graduate student with an interest in program and curricular development and evaluation, community engagement, and higher education administration. The GA would gain experience and develop skills in evaluation, research, coordination, management, and facilitation as well as working knowledge of aspects of higher education and program development. Further, the TESOL GA will have creative opportunities both digitally (in helping us increase our web presence) and in the field of ESL and bilingual education (in helping develop PD opportunities for TESOL students and current TESOL educators in RI).
Throughout the assistantship, the GA will have access to a variety of supports from TESOL and Bilingual Education faculty mentors including Sarah Hesson and Alia Hadid.
