Graduate Assistant A.L.L.I.E.D.
Full-Time, (20 Hours Per Week)
Primary Purpose
In an effort to recruit and retain students from historically underrepresented groups into our education programs, we designed this one-credit course to help students develop both academic and cultural competencies. For students who often feel disconnected and marginalized in their educational experiences, A.L.L.I.E.D. offered a unique space for building community and strengthening a sense of self.
Duties and Responsibilities
- The graduate student will co-facilitate the A.L.L.I.E.D. sessions every Wednesday and serve as a group leader when faculty facilitator is absent.
- The graduate student will maintain the A.L.L.I.E.D. social media spaces in order to enhance the presence and community in this initiative.
- The graduate student will research current scholarship on the issues of belonging and persistence in higher education.
- The graduate student will keep records and collect data on the students in the A.L.L.I.E.D. program.
Qualifications
- Knowledge and comfort with issues of privilege, diversity and social justice
- Interest in student success and the retention of students from underrepresented groups in higher education
- Strong organizational skills including use of technology (specifically Google Drive)
- Interpersonal skills for working with faculty, staff and students
- Strong ability to initiate new systems, initiatives, and structures to support student success
Benefit of the Graduate Assistant to Students
Our graduate assistants have been served by this opportunity in many ways. All of them were able to:
- Practice facilitation skills by leading several of the A.L.L.I.E.D. class meetings.
- Become familiar with the research in higher education, diversity, and belonging.
- During the pandemic, our GA led our team in moving the course to ZOOM and creating digital materials to support the undergraduates in the program.
- Finally, each of the GAs qualified as “underrepresented” themselves so A.L.L.I.E.D. was able to provide a space of belonging and connection for them, too!
NOTE: all but one of our A.L.L.I.E.D. graduate assistants were alumni of the A.L.L.I.E.D. program themselves thus providing a pipeline for leadership and persistence in higher education.
Other
Must be available on Wednesdays 11-2, plus 17 additional hours meeting with students/faculty/staff, collecting data, and researching issues of student retention.
