Certification in Middle Level Grades

The Certificate of Graduate Study in middle grades certification, which meets the Rhode Island Department of Education’s (RIDE’s) middle grades certification, is a 12-credit program designed to provide advanced graduate study and practicum training for students with an certification in  elementary or secondary  education. The program is fully online (both synchronous and asynchronous) except for field requirements.

Program Details

Admission Requirements

  • completed application form accompanied by a $50, nonrefundable application fee
  • copy of the candidate’s teaching certificate
  • official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate records
  • applicants must have taken or have a plan to take at least 21 undergraduate credit hours in their subject content area (see list of required courses below) and have a 3.0 GPA
  • 3 letters of recommendation attesting to the candidate’s middle-level graduate work

Course Information

The three courses in this program are taught in a sequence and address both state and national middle level standards. The courses help all candidates answer the essential question: How, as a middle level educator, can I cultivate and sustain a more just and equitable world through critically reflective practices?

Students must also be proficient in their content area, either having earned a secondary teaching certificate in a content area (math, science, English or social studies) or an elementary education teaching certificate, with at least 21 hours of designated coursework in math, science, English or social studies. (See course list below.) The appropriate Middle Grades Praxis Content Test must also be completed prior to applying for certification.
