Bridges and Murphy Earn Trip to NCGA National Championships

Providence, R.I. – Senior Cory Bridges (Foxboro, Mass.) and freshman Emily Murphy (Hamden, Mass.) have been selected as individual qualifiers to the 2014 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championships, which will be hosted by Ithaca on March 21-22.
Brockport, Cortland, Ursinus and Ithaca will compete as teams from the East, while Wisconsin-Lacrosse, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Wisconsin-Oshkosh will represent the West. In addition, 16 individual qualifiers from each region were competed based on their performances this season.
Bridges will be making her third consecutive trip to the NCGA Championships and will compete as a bars specialist. She tied for 16th on bars (9.125), while also tying for 23rd on vault (9.200) at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships on March 8.
For the season, she is averaging a score of 8.688 on bars through eight competitions. Bridges posted a season-high score of 9.275 on that event at Springfield on Feb. 22. She finished 15th at the NCGAs as a sophomore in 2012 and tied for 20th as a junior last winter.
Murphy will be making her first appearance at the NCGAs and is one of eight all-arounders to be selected as individual qualifiers. She finished eighth in the all-around (34.325) and 27th on vault (9.150) at the ECAC Championships yesterday.
For the season, she is averaging scores of 8.956 on vault, 8.290 on bars, 8.497 on beam, 8.783 and 34.929 in the all-around. Murphy posted a season-high all-around point total of 35.425 at the Brockport Invitational on Feb. 9.
Head Coach Bob Nannig’s team placed sixth (six teams) at the 2014 ECAC Championships with a team score of 173.725. RIC wrapped up the season with an 0-8 overall record and an 0-7 mark against ECAC Div. III competition.
