Academic Opportunities

Undergraduate Research

Rhode Island College's commitment to the development of an open and inquiring mind includes involving undergraduates in a vibrant research program. Research opportunities with faculty mentors give talented, motivated students a chance to gain early experience in their chosen field, affording opportunities only available to graduate students at many other schools.

Honors Program

The College Honors Program at Rhode Island College has a long history of achievement involving excellent and committed teachers, high-achieving students, and accomplished alumni. Honors students benefit from smaller, discussion-oriented classes in our General Education curriculum, opportunities for collaboration with faculty on a senior project, and various other academic opportunities. Honors students are also eligible for merit-based scholarship awards and special housing on campus.

Presidential Scholarships

These merit-based scholarships of at least $2,000 per year are awarded to entering freshmen for up to four years of study. Incoming freshmen who rank in the top 30 percent of their graduating class and who have minimum combined SAT scores of 1100 (critical reading and mathematics) or a minimum ACT Composite score of 24 are eligible for consideration. Students wishing to be considered for the Presidential Scholarship must submit a complete application for admission (including first-quarter senior grades and SAT scores). This application must be postmarked by December 15 for priority consideration.

Study Abroad

Study-abroad opportunities are available for a semester, year, summer, or during the short January term. The choice of program and country depends upon the interests of the individual student. A faculty member in sociology serves as coordinator of an exchange program with PUCE University in Quito, Ecuador. The college is also affiliated with four study-abroad program providers.

Domestic Study-Away Program

Rhode Island College is a member of the National Student Exchange (NSE), a consortium of 200 public colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The program is open to sophomores and juniors who may exchange for a semester or year while still paying Rhode Island College tuition.

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (Outside Linkhttp://www.nscs.org/) is the nation's only interdisciplinary honors organization to invite first-and second-year college students. Membership is by invitation only, based on grade point average and class standing. NSCS offers members exclusive access to scholarships, career resources, leadership, and networking opportunities. NSCS has more than 625,000 members and 235 chapters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Outside LinkTau Sigma

The Rhode Island College (Gamma Kappa) Chapter of Tau Sigma is one of over 90 chapters throughout the country. Tau Sigma recognizes the academic achievement of the most outstanding transfer students nationwide through induction, academic scholarships and fellowship with fellow inductees. Members strive to improve the services provided to the transfer student population at Rhode Island College.

Accreditation of an institution of higher education by the New England Association indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality periodically applied though a peer review process. An accredited college or university is one which has available the necessary resources to achieve its stated purposes through appropriate educational programs, is substantially doing so, and gives reasonable evidence that it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Institutional integrity is also addressed through accreditation.

Accreditation by the New England Association is not partial but applies to the institution as a whole. As such, it is not a guarantee of every course or program offered, or the competence of individual graduates. Rather, it provides reasonable assurance about the quality of opportunities available to students who attend the institution.

The RI STEM Center at Rhode Island College is the state's hub for science, technology, engineering and mathematics educator training and initiatives. The RI STEM Center is committed to initiating and facilitating state-of-the-art professional development, research, and collaborative partnerships among Pre-K-college educators, teacher candidates, students, and other community stake-holders to advance STEM education.
