Biotechnology Programs

Biotechnology is one of the nation’s fastest growing industries and is responsible for a large share of public and private research and development expenditures.  Biotechnology includes all applications that make use of living systems to produce useful products and encompasses pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and production and distribution processes for biologically-based products.  In Rhode Island, the industry employs nearly 5000 workers (Tech Collective, 2014) in positions such as biological technicians, chemical technicians, chemists, business operations specialists, biostatisticians, and medical scientists.  RIC graduates can be found working in each of these positions.

At RIC, students have a range of majors to choose from that lead into the biotechnology sector.

Biology

The Biology B.S. program provides students with a basic understanding of the scope of the biological sciences, first-hand experience with a range of laboratory techniques, development of written and oral communication skills, as well as opportunities for focused research experiences. Graduates have been highly successful in a wide range of career paths such as: medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, physical therapy, pharmacy, public health, education, medical research, biotechnology, environmental science, and industrial research.

Chemistry

The Bachelor of Science program in chemistry is certified by the American Chemical Society and incorporates coursework from the five categories of chemistry: organic, inorganic, physical, analytical and biological, as well as faculty-mentored research projects.  With this degree, graduates have accepted positions in a broad range of science fields including medicine, pharmacy, optics, pharmaceuticals, academic research labs, dentistry, chemical engineering, regulation, education, biotechnology and environmental science. The new Biological Chemistry track is particularly geared to the biotechnology industries and includes an intensive Biochemistry Lab course driven by a central hypothesis to reflect a scientific research experience.

Health Sciences, Human Services Track

The Health Sciences program prepares students for careers in Human Services with a common core of courses in biology, chemistry, health education, math, philosophy, psychology and sociology. Career options include research into aging disorders; analysis of trends in retirement, income, health care or housing; planning or administering health care delivery systems; advocating for the aged or underserved; and working as health insurance consultant, pharmaceutical, and medical or dental product sales.

Medical Imaging

The medical imaging program at Rhode Island College is a joint program offered in conjunction with Rhode Island Hospital's School of Diagnostic Imaging. It is a comprehensive four-year program consisting of General Education and cognate courses at Rhode Island College followed by clinical education courses at the School of Diagnostic Imaging. The program prepare graduates to be competent in the art and science of imaging technologies for the human body involving a wide range of modalities: X-ray, nuclear medicine, computed tomography, sonography, and MRI.

Behavioral Neuroscience Minor in Psychology

The Behavioral Neuroscience minor prepares students for diverse careers or graduate study in fields related to behavior and brain function. Students graduating with a minor in behavioral neuroscience in combination with degrees in psychology, biology, chemistry, computer science, or others may choose to pursue careers in biotechnology, consulting, medicine, the pharmaceutical and/or medical industry, public health, research, or teaching.

Health Care Administration

The B.S. in Health Care Administration is specifically targeted for students pursuing supervisory and entry-level management positions and/or preparation for graduate education in the management of health care systems. Students choose electives in gerontology, human resource management, informatics, management foundations, and wellness. The informatics track includes courses in management information systems, computer security, database programming, and an informatics course that covers electronic medical records and clinical decision support.
