Uniform Resource Locator. The name which identifies a particular resource on a computer somewhere on the Internet. URLs have many different forms, and consist of several parts. The most common type of URL is the sort which refers to a web page, for example: http://www.ric.edu/index.html

URLs include the name of the protocol to use to retrive information ('http' in this example), the server from which to get it (www.ric.edu), where on the server the information is located and what it is called ('/index.html').

URLs may have even more parts depending on what kind of information is being retrieved and exactly how it is being accessed.
