A measurement of how much data can be transmitted over a connection. Generally, it is measured in bits per second; for example a modern cable modem may have a bandwidth of 3 million bits per second or more.

Bandwidth is also used a measure of the amount of data that can be transfered over longer periods of time. For example, a company providing web page hosting services may allow each user 1 gigabyte of bandwidth per month; usage in excess of this limit might be subject to an additional charge.
