Student Activities BRIEFS
The Office of Student Activities sends a weekly e-mail with updates on programs sponsored by the Office of Student Activities and other on and off campus events. To view the Student Activities Briefs Archives, go to http://www.ric.edu/student_activities/sABriefs.php
Free Period
Every Wednesday from 12:30pm - 2:00pm is Free Period, a time-slot during which classes are not scheduled so that students can get involved on campus. Many student clubs and organizations meet and many campus-wide events occur during this time.
Clubs and Organizations
The most obvious way to get involved is to join a student club or organization! It can be a great way to plan events, meet people with similar interests, and even enhance your resume. There are more than 80 groups to choose from:
- media groups
- cultural awareness groups
- groups associated with academic majors and community service
For an updated list of current organizations, please visit the Student Organizations page.
Starting a New Student Organization
Have a great idea for a student organization at Rhode Island College? Consider starting a new group! The process can be a lot of work, but it often leads to a very rewarding experience. The process requires that you work with both Student Activities and Student Community Government, Inc.; if you have questions along the way you can contact Assistant Director, Student Activities Marissa Weiss at mweiss@ric.edu or the SCG Secretary at secretary@scg.ric.edu.
Steps for Starting a New Student Organization
-
Review the list of current student organizations at http://www.ric.edu/student_activities/sOrganizations.php to ensure that a similar organization is not already in existence.
-
Discuss the idea with the SCG Secretary or Assistant Director, Student Activities.
-
Find at least three other students who are interested in joining the organization and a proposed faculty or professional staff advisor.
-
Submit the
Intent to Form a New Student Organization form, which asks for information about the organization's purpose, activities, and possible members. -
Once contacted by Student Activities or SCG confirming the acceptance of the Intent form, submit the organization's constitution to the SCG Secretary. The Secretary can provide a model constitution upon which to base the new organization's constitution.
-
Meet with the SCG Student Organizations Committee and/or Parliament to answer questions about the organization. Please note that this process may take a few weeks. The SCG Secretary will let you know which meeting you will need to attend.
-
Receive approval from Parliament.
-
Submit the online organization officer list to Student Activities at http://www.ric.edu/student_activities/StudentOrgRegForm.php.
-
Submit a signed advisor agreement, and president and treasurer affidavits to SCG in Student Union 401.
-
Meet with the Assistant Director, Student Activities to review policies related to Student Organizations.
