Academic Background

Assistant Professor of Sociology Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur joined the sociology department in 2008. She earned her B.A. in sociology from Mount Holyoke College and her M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from New York University. Before coming to Rhode Island College, she taught at New York University, Queens College of the City University of New York, and Hamilton College. She teaches courses in race and ethnicity, law and society, and research methods here at Rhode Island College, and has also taught courses on the sociology of education, the sociology of the Holocaust, social movements, and social problems.

Professor Arthur has published several research articles on issues related to social movements in higher education and has also published many book reviews and scholarly encyclopedia articles. Her current research is on the emergence of academic programs in women's studies, Asian American studies, and queer studies in higher education, particularly social movements of students and faculty that aimed to establish such programs. Prior projects have focused on such topics as 1960s-era student movements, the racialization of Asians in the Americas, and race and standardized testing, and she hopes to develop projects on legal education in the future. Professor Arthur is an active participant in the American Sociological Association. She has held the title of secretary-treasurer of the ASA Section on the History of Sociology for three years and is currently the editor of Critical Mass, the newsletter of the Section on Social Movements and Collective Behavior.

Beyond the College, Professor Arthur likes to spend her time reading speculative fiction and exploring the food cultures of Rhode Island and New York City. She is an especially avid fan of local farmers' markets and vegetarian restaurants.
