Math Competency Requirement

The Math Competency Requirement is a prerequisite for all college level mathematics and lab science courses.  The requirement must be completed before you complete 15 credits at the college or you will be placed on Academic Probation.

There are multiple ways to meet the requirement:

  1. A minimum score of 480 on the math portion of the SAT
  2. A minimum score of 20 on the math portion of the ACT
  3. Transferring in a course equivalent to Math 177 or higher at RIC
  4. Successful completion of Math 010 or equivalent
  5. Accuplacer scores:

Arithmetic + Algebra score of at least 107
or
Algebra score of at least 57
If you took the Accuplacer at another school and met the minimum score requirements, please have the scores sent from your previous school to testscores@ric.edu

Once you have satisfied the Math Competency Requirement, you are eligible to register for college level math and science courses.

Accuplacer

It is strongly recommended that you prepare for the Accuplacer.  If you do not meet necessary scores on the exam, you will need to pass a non-credited Pre-Algebra course (Math 010).
The day of the exam you will need your RIC ID and something to write with.  The exam is timed for 50 minutes and use of a calculator is NOT PERMITTED.

Here is a Adobe PDFpractice test from the College Board website with answers on the last page.

College Board also offers a free Accuplacer web-based study app available here: https://accuplacerpractice.collegeboard.org.  You can create an account and should focus on the Arithmetic and Algebra sections.
