Viola Davis ’88 wins second Tony Award

RIC grad Viola Davis ’88 won a Tony Award for leading actress in play for her portrayal of Rose in the play “Fences.” Her co-star Denzel Washington took home the leading actor in a play award as Rose’s husband Troy in the play, a revival of August Wilson’s 1987 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner.

Davis, who also graduated from RIC’s Upward Bound program, previously won the Tony Award in 2001 for her work in “King Hedley II.” She was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe Award for supporting actress in the 2008 movie “Doubt.”

Davis received an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from RIC in 2002.
