Eighth annual Griffin Memorial Recital Feb. 10

The eighth annual Deborah Griffin Memorial Faculty Recital takes place on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 8 p.m. in the Nazarian Center's Sapinsley Hall.

The concert showcases the talents of the Music, Theatre, and Dance Department faculty, and will include various instrumentalists performing both solo and ensemble pieces.

“The recital has traditionally been a varied concert including piano solos and ensemble pieces, guitar duets, vocal solos and ensembles, and brass and woodwind solo and ensemble music,” says Teresa Coffman, RIC professor of music.

According to Coffman, Griffin was an exemplary RIC student who was “thriving,” as a music education major. She perished, along with her four children, when their apartment caught fire in December 2000.

The annual recitals serve as a fundraiser the Deborah Griffin Memorial Scholarship, which benefits outstanding music majors studying at RIC. The first Deborah Griffin Memorial Scholarship was awarded in May 2008 at the RIC Spring Choral Concert.

The RIC chorus and the RIC student chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, both of which Griffin was a member of during her time at the college, sponsor the concert.

Admission is free. All donations benefit the Deborah Griffin Memorial Scholarship Fund. If you would like to contribute and are unable to attend the recital, checks should be made payable to the RIC Foundation with “Griffin Collegiate Scholarship” in the memo line and sent to the RIC Foundation, Rhode Island College, 600 Mt. Pleasant Ave., Providence, RI 02908.
