RIC to host R.I. Gov. Carcieri’s press conference, bill-signing ceremony Dec. 2

Rhode Island College will be the site of an education-related press conference and bill-signing ceremony with Governor Donald L. Carcieri on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 3 p.m. in Alger Hall (Room 110).

Carcieri will join state Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed, Rep. Joseph McNamara, Deborah A. Gist, commissioner of elementary and secondary education, Steve Maurano, acting commissioner of higher education, and several education leaders at a signing event for several pieces of legislation related to education initiatives, including H5286/S1052, an act authorizing the “Bachelors Degree in Three” program.

Carcieri will also sign S 0728, an act requiring the adoption and implementation of a formula to calculate information about “on-time” graduation from students in Rhode Island public high schools, and H5266 Substitute A, an act to promote public awareness of and the uses of early intervention services in regard to autism spectrum disorder.

Additionally, the governor and Commissioner Gist will speak about a number of legislative initiatives for education improvement in Rhode Island and the state’s efforts to compete for federal Race to the Top funds.
