Art of retired professor Lawrence Sykes on display at Gallery Z

Lawrence Sykes, retired RIC professor of art, will be featured in an exhibition At Gallery Z in Providence from May 6-30. An opening reception will be held at the gallery Thursday, May 21, from 5-9 p.m.

Titled “Ancient Timeless Shores: Photo-Constructives by Lawrence Sykes,” the multi-layered works feature different textures, variations in scale and a blend of landscape and symbolism.

In addition to RIC, Sykes has taught at New York University, the College of Art in Ghana, and the Parsons School of Design West Africa Program. He has also served as commissioner for the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. Sykes’ artwork has been collected and exhibited by museums throughout the United States, Brazil and Malawi in Southeast Africa.
