RIC’s Performing Arts Series will present the internationally popular Complexions Contemporary Ballet in a return performance at the College on Friday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium in Roberts Hall.

Complexions is one of the most explosive of today’s contemporary dance companies, with performances that pulsate with exuberance and sensuality. It was assembled and is directed by former Alvin Ailey Dance Company principal dancers Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden.

When Richardson and Rhoden founded the ensemble in 1994, they envisioned a contemporary ballet that combined various cultures, talent and artistic vision. Gathering dancers of all disciplines and backgrounds, the founders set their energized choreography to a soundtrack of hits by musicians such as U2, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Muddy Waters.

Rhoden and Richardson’s efforts yielded a series of groundbreaking dance productions that have been characterized by The New York Times as “hyperkinetic, flashy exhibitions of physical prowess.”

Within a year of its creation, Complexions earned The New York Times Critics Choice Award. The ensemble has since toured the world, earning effervescent reviews in Australia, Singapore, Germany and Poland.

Attendees of the group’s upcoming RIC performance will surely agree with the Australia Art Centre’s description of Complexions: “This ballet rocks.”
