Anchormen Roll Past Western, 6-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rhode Island College men’s tennis squad posted a 6-3 victory at Western Connecticut in a Little East Conference contest on Tuesday afternoon.

RIC (5-6, 2-1 LEC) held a 2-1 lead after doubles action. RIC senior Cory Duquette (Warwick, Rhode Island) and sophomore Chandler Scott (Ashaway, Rhode Island) posted an 8-3 win over freshman Jacques Fortier (Southbury, Connecticut) and senior Matt O’Keefe (Cromwell, Connecticut) at the No. 2 singles spot.

The Anchormen’s third doubles team of sophomores Matthew Gambardella (West Warwick, Rhode Island) and Alan Esposito (Clinton, Connecticut) posted an 8-3 victory against junior Adam Howard (Waterford, Connecticut) and junior Jeff Hensley (Naugatuck, Connecticut) to notch RIC’s second point of the contest.

Senior Jason Hipona (Orange, Connecticut) and freshman Aaron Campos (Ridgefield, Connecticut) recorded the lone doubles point for Western Connecticut (4-7, 1-2 LEC), taking the 8-0 win over RIC freshman William Tavares (Kingston, Rhode Island) and junior Lee Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) at the No. 1 spot.

In singles action, Tiberi posted a (6-0, 7-6 (5-0) win over Howard at No. 3, with Gambardella recording a (7-5, 6-2) win against Hensley at No. 4 singles.

Esposito notched a (6-1, 6-2) victory against Fortier, while freshman Jonathan Glendinning (Exeter, Rhode Island) rounded out the singles wins for RIC, taking a hard fought (6-4, 1-6, 10-8) win over O’Keeke at No. 6 singles.

Campos recorded a (6-0, 6-1) win over Tavares at No. 1,while Hipona notched the other singles victory for Western Connecticut, defeating Scott (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Salem State in a Little East Conference contest on Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m.
