Jarell Forbes Named Little East 
Men’s Track Athlete of the Year




Junior All-American Jarell Forbes

 

Providence, R.I. – Rhode Island College junior Jarell Forbes (Providence, R.I.) was named the Little East Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Year. In addition, freshmen Steven Vazquez (Central Falls, R.I.) and Destinee Barrette (Warwick, R.I.) were named the LEC’s Rookie Field Athletes of the Year, for the men’s and women’s programs, respectively.

Forbes finished seventh in the nation in the 400m hurdles, en route to attaining All-American honors, with an effort of 52.81 in the final day of competition at the 2014 NCAA Div. III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 22-24. Forbes assured himself of All-American honors with a fifth-place (52.59) effort in the preliminaries of the 400m hurdles on the first day of competition. 

He earned All-ECAC honors after taking the title in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.48 at the ECAC Championships on May 15-16. Forbes also placed 13th in the preliminaries of the 110m hurdles (15.13). Forbes was the New England Champion in the 400m hurdles (52.89) and also notched a second place finish in the 110m hurdles (14.78) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 3.

He picked up a trio of New England Alliance honors at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 27, as he was the N.E. Alliance Champion in the 400m hurdles (54.24) and was the Little East Champion in the 110m hurdles, where he finished second overall (15.08). Forbes also placed third in the long jump (6.22m) and 11th in the high jump (1.78m).

Vazquez tied for second place in the high jump (2.09m) en route to All-American honors at the 2014 NCAA Div. III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 22-24. He picked up All-ECAC honors with a third place finish in the high jump (2.06m) at the ECAC Championships on May 15-16. Vazquez took second place and established a new program record in the high jump (2.10m) at the New England Open Championships on May 9-10.

Vazquez earned All-New England honors in the high jump (1.98m) after finishing fourth overall at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 3. He earned a pair of N.E. Alliance honors, placing third in the high jump (1.98m) and sixth in the triple jump (12.60m), while also finishing 17th in the 400m (53.01) at the New England Alliance Championships on April 27. 

Barrette placed 22nd in the hammer (45.86m) at the 2014 NCAA Div. III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 22-24. She earned All-ECAC honors with a fourth place finish in the hammer (49.74m) at the ECAC Championships on May 15-16.

She finished third in the hammer (51.49m) at the New England Open Championships on May 9-10. Barrette was the N.E. Alliance Champion in the hammer and established a new program record (50.15m) along the way at the Alliance Championships on April 27. She also took 11th in the discus (31.03m) and 12th in the shot (10.36m).
