Anchormen and Women Make League History as Both Teams Win 2014 Little East Championship Games

Providence, R.I. – Top-seeded Rhode Island College Anchorwomen defeated second-seeded Southern Maine, 64-59, in the Championship Game of the 2014 Little East Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at The Murray Center. And the second-seeded Anchormen took down top-seeded Eastern Connecticut, 70-61, in the Championship Game of the 2014 Little East Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament. This marks only the second time in league history that a single institution has won both the Little East Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship (Eastern Connecticut, 1992) in the same year. It also marks just the second time in Rhode Island College history that both the Anchormen and Anchorwomen will be competing in the NCAA Tournament at the same time.

“It feels terrific,” said Rhode Island College Head Coach Bob Walsh, following the victory. “We’ve set a pretty good standard in our program for championships. We’ve played in this game for eight years in a row and we’ve won six of them. The kids were just relentless today. They played the game of their lives. Eastern was the best regular-season team in the history of our league. Nobody’s ever been 16-0 coming into this game. I have so much respect for Eastern Head Coach Bill Geitner. For us to make them so uncomfortable with our defense the entire game is really, really impressive. I give our kids a ton of credit.”
