StyleWeek Providence Showcases the Work of RIC Jewelry Students and Alumni

Rhode Island College art students and alumni displayed their offbeat jewelry during StyleWeek at the Providence Biltmore.

Established in 2009, StyleWeek introduces emerging artists to buyers and the media. This year the organizers partnered with RIC’s jewelry and metals program to create an exclusive exhibit of work by RIC students and alumni.

Participating students were Lynn Cacchiotti ’11, Lauren Cummings ’12, Jennifer Degangne, Julian De La Garza ’13, Vee Hight, Cynthia Lech ’10, Gabrielle Lopez, Alisha Low ’13, Avery Lucas ’09, Jennifer Roderick, Danielle Straub and Cuong Sy ’13. Also in attendance to support the students were RIC President Nancy Carriuolo; Ronald Pitt, vice president for academic affairs; William Martin, chair and professor of the art department; and Dianne Reilly, professor of art.

The student work ranged from small intricate pieces to large wearable sculptural art. “I was proud that StyleWeek, which has attracted so much attention to Providence, featured jewelry produced by RIC’s current students and recent alums,” said Carriuolo. “The jewelry is finely wrought and clever, right down to unusual clasps.”

Following the exhibit, StyleWeek models displayed RIC’s accessories before a panel of judges from the fashion industry. “When the models walked into the room, I was proud to see that the work of our students was innovative, well-designed and well-made,” said art professor Dianne Reilly. “It showed, once again, the high quality of student work that comes out of RIC’s art department.”   

The winner of the competition was Gabrielle Lopez, a senior honors student. Her winning piece, “Novi,” was a ring made of sterling silver, brass, drafting film and pigment. “It was a crank-operated windmill, both playful and beautifully crafted,” said department chair William Martin. With her win, Lopez will have the opportunity to hold her own solo show during the next StyleWeek.

Along with an outlet to showcase their art, StyleWeek provided students with a valuable preview of the professional fashion world, said Reilly. “It instilled in our students a sense of accomplishment and pride. Experiences like this can inspire a lifetime of work."
