Detours, Delays Expected as RIC Begins Construction to Improve College Road

Construction began on College Road on July 13, as part of a plan to improve traffic flow and safety on campus. Detours will be in place, and traffic delays are expected during the construction period.

Don Tencher, assistant vice president of administration, said engineers recommended the changes to allow two-way traffic along the entire length of College Road. Part of it now is restricted to one-way traffic in the area around Roberts Hall, in the center of campus.

The construction will affect the portion of College Road that stretches from Parking Lot B (a commuter lot) to the Henry Barnard School in the center of campus, Tencher said. Detours will be in place around that section of College Road.

The RIPTA bus stop at the Keefe Transportation Center will be relocated to Parking Lot A, an open parking lot off College Road, during the construction period.

Tencher said the project includes installation of a roundabout, drainage and a conduit for future projects, as well as paving. The contractor is Hugo Key and Son Inc. of Newport.

Check the college website (www.ric.edu) for additional traffic and construction advisories, as well as a visual map of the affected areas. Motorists are encouraged to use extra caution when driving through campus during the construction period.

This project is expected to be complete by Aug. 16.
