When schools and businesses come together, everyone wins: even if the groups are competing against each other. That was the case at the Central Falls High School Chess Team/RI CEO Invitational tournament, held recently in Providence to raise money for a scholarship fund that benefits graduating team members.

This year’s scholarship recipient was co-captain Freddy Monteiro, who will enter Rhode Island College this fall. Monteiro came to the United States from the Republic of Cape Verde in 2000 and has been a member of what his coaches have repeatedly called their best team ever.

This was a particularly successful year for the team, as it placed eighth out of 64 teams at the SuperNationals, a national tournament held every four years and sponsored by the United Sates Chess Federation. The Central Falls Middle School team also placed in the top 10 at the event. Participation in the SuperNationals was partially sponsored Garrison Confections and actors Viola Davis ‘88 and Alec Baldwin each donated $2,500 to help defray the team’s travel costs.

The Central Falls Chess Team has won 11 State High School and 12 State Middle School Championships in the past 13 years. They have attended six national tournaments, scoring in the top 10 each time they’ve competed.

The CEO Invitational was a way for the team to say thank you for the community support they have received. Participating CEOs were invited to either play against the students, get coaching from them, or just learn about the game.

Several prominent Rhode Island CEOs participated in the event, including Tim Hebert of Atrion, Charlie Kroll of Andera and Michael Lester of The Dorrance.
