RIC President Nancy Carriuolo has announced the hiring of Laura Meade Kirk, a veteran journalist with experience in public relations and social media, to promote the college’s academic and cultural achievements.

“Laura’s combination of experience and enthusiasm will help put Rhode Island College in the spotlight, where it belongs,” Carriuolo said. “She will use an exciting mix of traditional and new media to promote the many wonderful learning opportunities at Rhode Island College, as well as the incredible array of research and innovation that takes place here each and every day.”

Kirk will serve as associate director of communications, overseeing a staff of writers, editors and audio-visual professionals who are responsible for generating publicity for the college, Carriuolo said. She also will increase the use of multi-media and social media to optimize the college’s public relations efforts reach across Rhode Island and throughout the region.

“The students and faculty of Rhode Island College do so many amazing things that don’t get the attention they deserve,” Kirk said. “I look forward to the opportunity to promote Rhode Island College in ways it’s never been promoted before.”

Kirk was a reporter at the Providence Journal for more than 20 years and she has also taught as an adjunct professor in the English and Communications departments at RIC for the past 15 years.

Kirk most recently has served as public relations and social media coordinator at Amica Mutual Insurance Co., based in Lincoln, R.I.  She lives in North Attleboro, Mass., and has four children.
