Greg Gammell named GNAC Men’s Golf Coach of the Year

Greg Gammell, Rhode Island College’s men’s golf coach, has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Anchormen to their second consecutive league championship this past weekend.

Gammell, who was the GNAC Men’s Golf Coach of the Year in 2011 as well, saw his team win the 2012 GNAC Championship with score of 639 (316, 323; +63) on Oct. 21. RIC finished eight strokes better than second place Southern Maine and earned the league’s automatic qualifier to the 2012 NCAA DIV. III Men’s Golf Championships, which are held in May.

He saw three of his golfers earn First Team All-GNAC honors, which includes the league’s Rookie of the Year for the second straight season.

During the fall 2012 season, the Anchormen have won both the MCLA and Johnson & Wales Invitationals, while finishing second at the Alms Blazers tourney.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships and play at the Captains Course in Brewster, Mass. on Oct. 28-29. RIC will then be off for the winter and will resume competition in March.
