RIC Dance Company, Bridgman/Packer Dance, in concert Oct. 19

Combining film and dance in ways seldom seen, Bridgman/Packer Dance of New York City will present a concert with the Rhode Island College Dance Company on Friday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Nazarian Center’s Sapinsley Hall.

“Voyeur” is the name of the show that dancers Art Bridgman and Myrna Packer will present, inspired by the work of New York artist Edward Hopper. Hopper’s images are not used, but the voyeur aspect of his work is replicated through video. Video projections in the show create a sense of depth, while the use of live cameras on stage results in multiple perspectives as performers merge and collide with the imagery.

Angelica Cardente-Vessella, associate professor and director of dance at RIC, noted that Bridgman and Packer have won acclaim for their innovative integration of live performances and video technology, a combination that the Boston Globe has called “flat-out exhilarating” and “thrilling.”

Bridgman and Packer have collaborated as performers and choreographers since 1978, were named Guggenheim Fellows in 2008 and have won other awards and grants during their professional dancing careers.

The RIC Dance Company also will perform an original work by Bridgman/Packer.

The creative team for the Oct. 19 concert includes Bridgman/Packer’s first collaboration with Scott Lehrer, Grammy, Tony and Drama Desk award-winning sound designer.

General admission is $15, $5 for students, and discounts for groups and senior citizens are also available. For tickets, contact the RIC Box Office at (401) 456-8144.
