RIC President Nancy Carriuolo receives “Day of Portugal” medallion

Leonel Teixeira, vice-consul of Portugal to Providence, presents the “Day of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities Medallion” to RIC President Nancy Carriuolo.
Nancy Carriuolo, president of Rhode Island College, was recently presented the “Day of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities Medallion” at the Official Day of Portugal ceremony on June 8 at the Rhode Island State House.

This award was given to Carriuolo by Leonel Teixeira, vice-consul of Portugal to Providence. She received the award for both her support of Portuguese Studies at RIC and her participation in the Day of Portugal celebration.

The limited edition medallion is struck each year in Portugal and features a different city or region. This year, the piece depicts Lisbon, the capital city, commemorating the celebration of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities marked each year on June 10, the anniversary of the death of poet Luís Vas de Camões in 1580.

Camões wrote the epic poem “Os Lusíasas” which highlights the Portuguese golden age of discoveries, history and achievement.
