Rhode Island College graduating senior Alexandra Puleo of Smithfield has received the 2011-2012 Gladys C. and Sherwin J. Kapstein Award.

The $500 scholarship, administered through the Jewish Federation Foundation of RI, is given to a graduating RIC student whose higher education experience and activities reflect a deep commitment to promoting interfaith relationships.

Puleo, who is certified in special education and elementary education, dedicated much of her time to the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship while at RIC.

“This wasn’t just an award that happened to come your way, you earned it,” said James Salmo, vice president for college advancement and executive director of the RIC Foundation.

Gary Penfield, vice president for student affairs, and Kristen Salemi, director of the Student Union, also participated in the ceremony.

The award is given in honor of the late Gladys C. and Sherwin J. Kapstein. Sherwin Kapstein, who received an honorary Doctor of Education degree from RIC in 2005, was at the forefront of numerous developments that helped shape public education in Rhode Island.
