RIC foreign language honor society inducts 15 new members
The Beta Gamma chapter #128 of the Phi Sigma Iota International Honor Society at Rhode Island College held its annual initiation ceremony on May 3.
Fifteen new members, 14 Spanish majors and one Spanish minor, were inducted into membership. Faculty advisor Maricarmen Margenot and professors Olga Juzyn and Miriam Gorriaran conducted the ceremony. Family, friends and students from different languages from the Department of Modern Languages enjoyed a Cinco de Mayo reception/celebration following the ceremony.
The Beta Gamma chapter of the International Foreign Language Honor Society, Phi Sigma Iota, was chartered at Rhode Island College in 1982. It recognizes outstanding accomplishment in the study or teaching of any of the academic fields related to foreign language, literature, or culture. Phi Sigma Iota is the highest academic honor in the field of foreign languages.
There are approximately 250 chapters of Phi Sigma Iota at institutions of higher learning in the US, Mexico and France. The chapter at RIC became dormant in 1988 but was reactivated last year.
