Trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and the RIC Concert Jazz Band will collaborate on a wide array of jazz pieces on Monday, May 7, at 8 p.m. in the Nazarian Center’s Sapinsley Hall. Joseph Foley, associate professor of music and studio instructor for RIC trumpet students, will conduct.

There are two halves to the performance, and Gordon will play both. The first half includes George Shearing’s “Lullaby Birdland" and Freddie Green's "Until I Met You." Gordon will also give his "Tribute to Louis Armstrong" -- which Foley describes as "a mix of old-time jazz standards and modern pieces" -- including "Basin Street Blues," "That Old Feeling," "Umbrella Man" and "Hello Pops."

The second half will open with the jazz band's rendition of "First Flight." Gordon will then return for a set of his arrangements and compositions which include "Hallelujah Shout," "The Woogie," "Wishing Well" and "Apollo Today: What You Dealin' Wit?" which Foley describes as a funk and hip-hop piece.

In addition to playing their instruments, Gordon and select members of the jazz band will be singing during the performance.

“Gordon pumps variety into his creations by employing a natural, vocal-like manner that sings out with passion,” wrote Jim Santella from AllAboutJazz.com.

Gordon, a current faculty member of the Jazz Arts Program at the Manhattan School of Music, developed a passion for jazz at the age of 13 after listening to a extensive record collection his family had inherited from an aunt.

He has received the Jazz Journalists Association Award for Trombonist of the Year six times, most recently in 2011, and has released 15 solo albums.
