In Memoriam – Muriel A. Cornell, RIC professor emerita

Muriel A. Cornell, RIC associate professor emerita of English, passed away April 7 at the age of 84. She was a resident of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and formerly of Newport.

She was awarded the rank of associate professor emerita in 1986, after a distinguished 23-year career as a faculty member of the English Department at Rhode Island College.

In a letter to Muriel Cornell announcing her emerita appointment, then-RIC President Carol Guardo wrote, “In addition to your fine teaching, the College acknowledges your efforts in introducing linguistics to our undergraduate curriculum as well as courses in children’s literature and science fiction.”

Muriel Cornell served as assistant chair of the English Department and as chair of numerous department committees.

Her obituary noted that she authored many books and articles on linguistics, and was a Chaucer scholar who could speak and read Middle English.

She held a bachelor’s degree in English from New York University, a master’s in English from the University of Rhode Island and a doctorate in linguistics and English from the University of Connecticut. “A Linguistic Analysis of two Old English Elegies” was the subject of her doctoral dissertation.

She leaves two daughters.
