Undergrad nursing student inductees, award recipients recognized at International Honor Society Of Nursing ceremony

Rhode Island College nursing students were inducted as new members in Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing through Delta Upsilon Chapter at-Large in a ceremony held on Dec. 4 at the Quonset “O” Club in North Kingstown.

The Delta Upsilon Chapter Scholarship for a RIC undergraduate student was awarded to Deborah McKenna. The Steiner-Brem Family Memorial Award for Excellence in Parent Child Nursing was given to RIC student Laura DeNoncour.

Susan Amalfitano received the graduate student scholarship. Joanne Costello, faculty in the School of Nursing, received a research grant for her work evaluating the effectiveness of an initiative in which all patients are offered HIV testing upon admission by nurses through a standing order/protocol system at a local hospital.

Senior nursing student Alexandra Smith was selected to represent the new inductees on the Chapter’s website. Alexandra’s biography will be posted along with a photograph taken at the induction. Many other photos from the ceremony are available for viewing as well.

Sigma Theta Tau International is a prestigious organization of nurse leaders, scholars and researchers. The honor society, founded in Indiana University in 1922, currently has 470 chapters at college and university campuses worldwide. It is committed to improving the health of the public by advancing nursing science.

Membership in the society is awarded to bachelor, master and doctoral candidates who achieve high scholastic averages, and to graduates of nursing programs who have made outstanding leadership contributions to nursing.
