College hosts commissioning ceremony for RIC student

RIC student Jeffry O’Loughlin, a management major, was appointed a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in a commissioning ceremony at Rhode Island College on Dec. 16.

O’Loughlin is in the Army Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) program, which is available to RIC students through an affiliation with Providence College.

A native of Cape Coral, Fla., O’Loughlin is a 2011 graduate of the ROTC Patriot Battalion, and will serve as an engineer officer.

A commissioning ceremony, which includes administration of the oath of office and a bar pinning, is a tradition that signifies a new officer joining the Profession of Arms.

This ceremony recognized the transformation from cadet to officer.
