In Memoriam – Roland B. Mergener, longtime RIC audiovisual director

Roland B. Mergener of North Providence, an audiovisual director and assistant professor at RIC until his retirement in 1992, died on July 4, 2011 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was 77.

He began his career at RIC in 1969, and managed instructional systems relating to computers, cable TV and satellite communications. His responsibilities also included providing computer technology to RIC’s faculty and students, and film and video to the college.

Prior to RIC, he was an elementary school teacher and principal, and from 1966-69, served as an instructional media consultant for the Texas Department of Education.

Roland Mergener received a BA from Providence College in 1959, an MEd from Our Lady of the Lake University in Texas in 1965, and an MLS (library science) from the University of Rhode Island in 1982.

In February 2010, he participated in a workshop and assessment meeting for the RIC Master Plan, a framework for facility planning from 2010-20.

In 1997, he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the North Providence Town Council after working as chair of the North Providence Environmental Commission, created by the council to work on town tree plantings, beautification efforts and litter control.

He served on the Association for Educational Communications and Technology; R.I. Education Media, including as president; and the RIC Lectures Committee, which he chaired from 1976-78.

He is survived by four children and six grandchildren.

College flags will be at half-staff through July 9 in memory of Roland Mergener.

A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, July 8, from 5-7 p.m. in the Henault-Gallogly Funeral Home, 5 Eddy St., West Warwick. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, July 9, at 10 a.m. in St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 1964 Smith St., North Providence.
