Anchorwomen softball team heads to NCAA tournament
Rhode Island College garnered an at-large berth to the 2011 NCAA Div. III Softball Tournament and will host the New England Regional on May 12-16 at home at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.
The Anchorwomen are making their fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in six years. It is also the fourth time in five years that RIC has been chosen as a host site. The Anchorwomen won the New England Region in 2008 and 2007 and advanced to the National Championship Round.
RIC is the No. 4 seed and will face fifth-seeded Worcester State on Thursday, May 12, at noon. The Anchorwomen swept a doubleheader from the Lancers on March 29 during the regular season.
The teams at the New England Regional: 1. Eastern Connecticut (30-4), 2. Coast Guard (36-2), 3. Endicott (35-6), 4. Rhode Island College (33-11), 5. Worcester State (28-9), 6. Lesley (29-6), 7. Husson (25-17), 8. St. Joseph’s-Maine (35-8).
Head coach Maria Morin’s team is 33-11 overall and finished the regular season with a 9-5 (second place tie) mark in the Little East Conference. RIC lost in the championship game of the 2011 Little East Tournament, 7-1, to Eastern Connecticut on May 7. It was the fifth time in six years that the Anchorwomen reached the conference tournament title game.
