RIC Cooperative Preschool receives 5-star rating

RIC Cooperative Preschool Inc., located on the campus of Rhode Island College, has earned the highest possible rating of five stars from BrightStars, an organization that helps childcare providers in Rhode Island learn about best practices in early learning and apply them to the care children receive.

There are only six preschools in Rhode Island that have a 5-star rating and only one cooperative preschool program.

The Co-op, in which parents are the teachers’ aides working with the children on a volunteer basis, had received a 4-star rating in February of 2010.

“The staff, parents and work/study students at the Co-op are so proud to participate in BrightStars and to be recognized for our commitment to quality education and care for the children and families we serve,” said Martha Dwyer, head teacher. Working together we continually strive to improve the preschool experience for the Co-op children.”

To participate in BrightStars, the Co-op was assessed in many quality standards and criteria. The program also received one or more unannounced site visits by BrightStars.

“BrightStars raises the bar for early childhood programs in Rhode Island,” said Tammy Camillo, BrightStars director. The Co-op Preschool’s BrightStars participation is a sign that they are a leader in a statewide effort to invest in high-quality early childhood care and education.”

The BrightStars childcare quality rating and improvement system was developed by a team of local early childhood and school-age care professionals and is based on national research on what constitutes quality in childcare programs. BrightStars is managed by the Rhode Island Association for the Education of Young Children (RIAEYC), a non-profit organization and the state affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
