RIC places 3 on Little East Women’s Basketball 25th Anniversary Team


Jo-Ann D’Alessandro
RIC alums Jo-Ann D’Alessandro ‘88, Cathy Lanni ’88 and Claudia DeFaria ‘96 were selected as members of the Little East Conference Women’s Basketball 25th Anniversary Team.

D’Alessandro was a guard on RIC’s women’s basketball team from 1983-87. She is RIC’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,426 career points. The North Providence native holds the RIC record for the most career assists and is second in career field goal percentage.

D’Alessandro was a member of RIC’s ECAC Division III championship team during the 1985-86 season and the program’s all-time leading scorer when her playing days were finished.

She was inducted into RIC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 and named to the college’s 75th Anniversary Women’s Basketball Team in 2005. She was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.

D’Alessandro is currently the assistant athletic director for internal affairs at RIC.


Cathy Lanni
Lanni was an All-American forward on RIC’s women’s basketball team from 1983-88. She is RIC’s all-time leading scorer with 1,677 points. She also holds the school record for the most career rebounds at 1,101. Lanni is the only RIC player to ever total over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. She was a member of RIC’s ECAC Division III championship team during the 1985-86 season.

Lanni missed the entire 1986-87 season with a broken foot, but came back to lead the team in scoring and rebounding as a senior in 1987-88.


Claudia DeFaria
She was inducted into RIC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 and named to the college’s 75th Anniversary Women’s Basketball Team in 2005. She was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.

DeFaria is one of the college’s all-time greatest women’s basketball players. In just two years at RIC, she scored 1,048 points, which ranks her ninth all-time in career scoring. She remains the only RIC player to ever score 1,000 points in just two seasons. She is also fifth all-time with 592 career rebounds.

As a senior, DeFaria was named the Little East Conference’s Player of the Year, First Team All-LEC and to the All-LEC Tournament team. DeFaria led the LEC in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 19.2 ppg and 11.8 rpg – a double-double for the entire season.

Prior to coming to RIC, DeFaria starred at the Community College of Rhode Island from 1990-92. She was inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. She was also honored as the CCRI alum of the year in 2008.

She was inducted into RIC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002 and named to the college’s 75th Anniversary Women’s Basketball Team in 2005. She is currently a member of the RIC Hall of Fame selection committee.

DeFaria is in her eighth season assisting RIC head women’s basketball coach Marcus Reilly.
