RIC’s Gary Penfield, Marissa Weiss receive NASPA awards

Gary Penfield, RIC vice president for student affairs, received the Region 1 Institutional Leadership Award at the NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education conference in Manchester, N.H., in November. Region 1 serves New England and the eastern provinces of Canada.

Marissa Weiss, RIC assistant director of Student Activities, was the Rhode Island recipient of NASPA’s Outstanding Mid-Level Professional Award.

Penfield, a two-time winner of NASPA’s Institutional Leadership Award, has been a vice president at RIC for 34 years. He has been recognized by the higher education community both locally and nationally.

Weiss, who has been at RIC since 2007, previously served as program coordinator at Duke University. She holds a Master of Science from Colorado State University in student affairs in higher education and is pursuing a PhD in education in the joint Rhode Island College/University of Rhode Island program.

The NASPA website describes the organization as the “leading voice for student affairs administration, policy, and practice, and affirms the commitment of the student affairs profession to educating the whole student and integrating student life and learning.” NASPA has over 11,000 members at 1,400 campuses, and represents 29 countries.
