The Miracle Worker, William Gibson's classic drama about a teacher and her deaf and blind student, comes vividly alive in a Rhode Island College Mainstage Theatre production. Directed by RIC grad Jimmy Calitri, the play depicts the emotionally volatile relationship between Anne Sullivan and her student, Helen Keller, and the "miracle" of learning to communicate. Derived from Keller's autobiography The Story of My Life and first staged as a teleplay in 1957, The Miracle Worker became a 1959 Broadway production with Anne Bancroftas Sullivan and Patty Duke as Keller, with the two recreating their roles in a 1962 movie.

A.R. Gurney's 1995 comedy, Sylvia, comes to Rhode Island College. RIC theatre professor Jamie Taylor, whose recent RIC-staged play Almost, Maine won Motif Magazine's college production of the year, directs. The story centers on the tense triangle created when Greg, who is experiencing a midlife crisis, brings home Sylvia, a dog who looks and talks like a human. Greg's wife, Kate, is unhappy with the arrival of the new housemate and the complications the canine brings to their marriage. A New York Daily News theatre critic said of Sylvia, "I can only call it one of the most involving, beautiful, funny, touching and profound plays I have ever seen."
