Assessment of Basic Skills Test Requirement
The test of basic skills is required by the RI Department of Education for admission to an approved teacher preparation program.
For an undergraduate student, there are three ways of meeting the requirement. Sorry, there is no waiver of any kind.
- SAT scores (no older than 5 years) at 1150 in combined Reading and Math, with at least 530 each, OR
- ACT scores (no older than 5 years) at least 24 Reading and 20 Math, OR
Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators test, meeting the following conditions: a composite score of 468 and Target scores in Math 150, Reading 156 and Writing 162. If an applicant has missed the Target score by 3 points or less AND has an overall GPA of 3.0 or better, the Composite score will be waived* (e.g. Math 147, Reading 153, Writing 159). Request that ETS send a score report to Rhode Island College (#3724). Although RIC will eventually receive your score, print a hard copy of your scores once you access them online.
The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators test takes effect September 1, 2014. If you took and met Target scores on any portion of the PPST before September 1, 2014, these scores or a combination of Core and PPST Target scores may count. You should contact Dr. Ellen Bigler (Secondary, K-12) at firstname.lastname@example.org or Dr. Lisa Owen (Elementary/Early Childhood, Special Education, Health and Physical Education) at email@example.com.
GRE scores (no older than 5 years) can be used if the applicant earned a composite score of 1100 on the 800 scale test with no less than 465 verbal and 584 quantitative, or a composite score of 300 on the 170 scale test with no less than 151 verbal and 147 quantitative.
* Composite Score Waiver: If you have an overall 3.0 GPA or better, and meet minimum individual scores (with at least 60 credits)
