Middle School Endorsement

The endorsement program in middle school education is for students who wish to teach in a middle school. Students must be enrolled in the elementary education program and must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Complete MLED 310, 320, 330, and 340.
  2. Complete a student teaching experience at a middle school.
  3. Complete the course requirements for an elementary education content major in one of the following areas: English (language arts), general science, mathematics, modern languages (French, Portuguese, or Spanish), or social studies.

Requirements for Students Electing a B.A. in Elementary Education

Students must complete the required courses in elementary education and select a content major from one of the following: English, general science, geography, history, mathematics, modern languages, political science, social studies, or theatre. These content majors are directly relevant to a subject area taught in pre-K–6 and provide appropriate depth and academic rigor in the content area. The following content majors will total more than 120 credits and will take more than four years to complete:

English General Science Geography

In addition to completing required courses in elementary education, students electing a content major in English must complete the following courses, with a minimum grade point average of 2.67. Students may not proceed to student teaching without the required GPA.

  • ENGL 201, 202, 205, 207, 210
  • THREE COURSES in literature at the 300- or 400-level.

Note: students seeking middle school endorsement must choose from ENGL 301 (or 302 or 303), 326 (or 327), and 336 as their three literature courses. ENGL 212 and SED 445 are also required for middle school endorsement.

Total credit hours: 32

In addition to completing required courses in elementary education, students electing a content major in general science must complete the following courses, with a minimum grade of C in each course and a minimum grade point average of 2.50:

  • BIOL 111; CHEM 105; PSCI 212, 357, 491 (or BIOL 491, or CHEM 491, or PHYS 491); PHYS 101
  • ONE COURSE from BIOL 112; CHEM 106; PSCI 210, 214, 217; PHYS 102

History Mathematics Modern Languages

In addition to completing required courses in elementary education, students electing a content major in history must complete the following courses, with a minimum grade of C in HIST 200, a minimum grade of C+ in HIST 362, and a minimum grade point average of 2.75:

  • ONE COURSE from Western History
  • ONE COURSE from Non-Western History
  • TWO COURSES from either: Western History, Non-Western History, or U.S. History
