Thomas Dukes, MSW, EdD is Assistant Professor of Counseling at Rhode Island College and School Counseling Program Coordinator in the Department of Counseling, Educational Leadership, and School Psychology. After more than a decade of practice as a child, adolescent, and family therapist, Dr. Dukes returned to graduate school at Boston University’s School of Education to complete a doctorate in Human Development and Education. His doctoral research examined the promotion of resilience among adolescents through increasing self-understanding in a small group intervention. For the past seven years he has taught aspiring school counselors at the graduate level. At Rhode Island College he teaches courses in developmental psychology, counseling, and school counseling.
Additionally, Dr. Dukes has participated in the Woonsocket Sustainable Communities Initiative. He is currently Post-secondary Representative on the Rhode Island School Counselor Association Board of Directors. He is also co-founder, along with Dr. Andrew Snyder of the Educational Leadership Program, of the Tandem Leadership Group, a national consulting firm dedicated to enhancing student achievement through leadership development. He has given talks locally, regionally, nationally and internationally; this fall Dr. Dukes co-presented (with Dr. Snyder) a paper at the International Conference on Education, Research, and Innovation in Madrid, Spain entitled, “Building the Principal’s Leadership Team: Leveraging the Professional School Counselor.”
Dr. Dukes also consults regularly with independent and public schools, providing clinical supervision and program development expertise to practicing school counselors. His research interests include the development and implementation of comprehensive developmental school counseling programs, the promotion of resilience among children and adolescents, and interdisciplinary collaboration in school leadership.
