The Wake

This immersive, time intensive, three screen, filmic project by two of
Denmark's more notorious visual artists takes it's title and motives from James
Joyce's, Finnegan's Wake, but paradoxically expands the open endedness of
Joyce's 'stream of consciousness' approach by eliminating words entirely. The
silent barrage of images as well as the duration and scale of the project give
it a presence less cinematic and more akin to painting or sculpture - as
something in which the viewer can immerse themselves at any point. Created in
2000, it has been exhibited primarily in Europe, and in 2001 received the London
DVD Europa Award. It was most recently presented at the 2002 Rio de Janeiro Film
Festival. Michael Kvium and Christian Lemmerz , have worked together on film, video, and performance projects since their days as students of the Royal Danish Academy of Art, though they each are also highly noted artists in their own right; Kvium primarily for his paintings, and Lemmerz for his sculpture. The Wake was produced by Dino Raymond Hansen and the director of cinematography is Lars Beyer. The project was supported by the: Danish Film Institute, The Kulturbro 2000 Foundation, the Danish Ministry of Research and Information Technology, the Danish Ministry of Culture, and Malmö University. Presented in cooperation with the DCA Gallery, New York and Galleri Faurschou, Copenhagen. This exhibit was curated by Dennis O’Malley, Director, Bannister Gallery. |
