Background

My education began with a BA and MA in English and then an MA in Reading Education. I began my career as a teacher of reading and writing of historically disenfranchised students and English language learners. This work led to my later pursuit of a PhD in sociocultural studies of education and teaching in educational foundations. My work in education research draws on the Cultural-Historical theory of L. S. Vygotsky, M. M. Bakhtin, and others to examine issues of language, literacy and learning in and out of school contexts. In this work, I use the tools of ethnographic research and discourse analysis in the examination of language and literacy practices of learners of all ages. I have worked to extend this theoretical framework in new ways to issues of race, class, and gender in education. Throughout my career, in my teaching, research, and service, issues of social justice have been central to my efforts.
