Notice: Scheduled Campus Power Outage
Infrastructure Update: IT downtime overnight
One of the projects in progress as part of the overall campus electrical infrastructure upgrade is the installation of underground wiring on campus. In order to complete this work prior to the start of school, all RIC-related Internet services will be offline from midnight tonight until 4 a.m. tomorrow morning (Friday, August 29). These services include RIC email, Blackboard, the RIC website and MyRIC/Peoplesoft, as well as Internet access. Please plan accordingly.
RIC has timed the installation to minimize impact on the campus community. We apologize for any inconvenience this required work may cause.
If you have questions about this outage, the Help Desk is available until 5 p.m. today (Thursday, August 28). To contact the Help Desk, call 456-8803 or email email@example.com.
Campus Power Outage - Thursday August 28, 2014 from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm
Rhode Island College in conjunction with Robert F. Audet electrical contractors and National Grid are continuing to work together on the major electrical upgrade for the campus.
One of the more time-consuming aspects of the upgrade - the installation of a new main transformer - must be completed prior to the residence hall move-in day. A delay until later in the semester puts the campus at greater risk of system failure, including heating.
However, the transformer will not be available for installation until the last week in August. Therefore, the college is planning to shut down the power to the campus for approximately 10 hours on Thursday, August 28, 2014 (rain date: Friday, August 29), beginning at 6:00 am. At that time, the college will partially run on generator power.
As was the case during the previous shutdown, air conditioning will not be operational during the outage. Buildings without generator power will be closed.
There are a number of buildings with limited generator coverage that will be closed or have restricted use during the outage period.

Due to the timing of the upgrade, key student services, such as the Bursar and the Financial Aid Office, will remain open during the shutdown.
Faculty members with routine IT requests are urged to address these prior to the shutdown. Please note that the USS Help Desk (401-456-8803) will have limited operations during the time of the upgrade.
Staff employees (classified, PSA and BOG) who are scheduled to report to work on the day of the shutdown and are affected by the power outage may, with their supervisor's approval, elect to discharge either vacation time or personal time. Employees who do not wish to discharge time or are unable to do so are advised to inform their supervisor as soon as possible, so that any necessary alternate work arrangements may be made.
We will be monitoring the situation during the outage. Staff from Facilities and Operations, Network and Telecommunications, User Support Services, Campus Police, and Capital Projects will be working throughout the outage and responding to any issues that may arise.
RELATED NOTICE: The annual shutdown for steam plant maintenance is still ongoing but is scheduled to complete prior to the President's Coffee Hour on Wednesday, August 27, 2014. This means that all campus buildings, except those on East Campus, are until then without air conditioning and hot water.
