Students: Get Help With FAFSA at Free Workshops This Month

Rhode Island College’s Office of Student Financial Aid will hold free FAFSA workshops this month to assist students in applying for financial aid and to meet RIC’s March 1 application deadline.

Workshops, open to new and returning students, will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20, and Monday, Feb. 24. Each workshop will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Alger Hall.

Students must register in advance for the workshops by calling RIC’s Office of Student Financial Aid at 456-8033.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is required for any student seeking financial aid to attend college. It determines all federal grant and loan awards as well as the amount a college student and their family can expect to contribute toward a college education.

Seventy-five percent of RIC undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid.

“Meeting our March 1 FAFSA undergraduate filing deadline is critical for students seeking financial aid,” said James Hanbury, director of student financial aid. “The Office of Student Financial Aid is holding these workshops to help students through this important step to financing their college education.”

RIC’s Office of Student Financial Aid staff will guide students through the online FAFSA application and provide support during the workshops.

Students should have the following on hand during the workshops:

·      If available, a completed 2013 federal income tax return and W-2 form(s) for student

·      If available, a completed 2013 federal income tax return and W-2 form(s) for parents (dependent students only)

·      Student’s federal student aid PIN

·      Dependent students are encouraged to bring a parent and parent’s federal student aid PIN

·      A small calculator (encouraged)

Students who are not able to attend the workshops, or who want additional help in navigating financial aid, may schedule an appointment with a financial aid counselor by calling the office.

The RIC Office of Student Financial Aid assists students and their families in funding educational costs at Rhode Island College and works to help remove financial barriers to help students achieve their educational goals.
